The Problem

Native American high school students on reservations in AZ, NM, NE and SD need help acheiving higher learning

Plan of Action

SSS students are first generation students focused on the importance of higher education that created HEARTs (Higher Education And Retention Trips). HEARTs is designed to encourage and assist Native American high school students to achieve higher education through a series of workshops, activities and mentoring focusing on college preparatory. They directly assist with goal setting, resume writing, essay development and scholarship applications. Volunteering during their fall and spring breaks SSS students drive to reservations in AZ, NE, NM and SD to spend one week mentoring and providing direct assistance to Native American students in grades 6-12. The college students will continue to keep a strong mentor relationship with the high school students for two years starting in their junior year and continuing through their senior year. Every trip has approximately 15 SSS students who help over 400 Native American high school students throughout the week.
