The Problem

Heifer International is a development organization that works with families and communities to help them become self-sufficient, equitable, and peaceable. Through "living loans" of livestock, Heifer trains community partners to care for the animals and reap the benefits of running a successful small businesses and providing for their family. Once the family is self-sufficient, they "pass on the gift" (the offspring of their animal) to another family in need. There is nothing better than helping someone become fully self-reliant and sustainable and generating a ripple effect that can transform an entire community.

Plan of Action

I volunteered at the Heifer Ranch for six months in 2007. It was a great time in my life and I met many wonderful people. I have since gone on to continue the work of Heifer by addressing food security issues in my current community while getting involved in poverty & sustainability education of my peers, as wells and youth and adults in the community. There are so many possibilities, none of which I may have realized had I not volunteered for Heifer.
