Helmets for Children in Low Income Families

the problem:

I am trying to get bicycle helmets for children in low income families. When families are pressed financially, simple safety decisions are put on hold. Additionally, many parents of low income families were raised in a low income family and were never educated on the importance of simple safety measures like bike helmets and seatbelt use. Therefore, I am trying to get helmets for these children to be handed out at a local pediatric clinic serving these low income families.

why it's important:

The project I am involved with is important to me. I recognize the importance of wearing a helmet because a helmet has protected me from injury in bike accidents on three occassions in my life. I realize that helmets are simple things that can make a whole lot of difference when used. For the most part, children that do not use bike helmets become adults that do not wear bike helmets with children of their own that do not wear bike helmets. This trend needs to be fixed with the young, upcoming generation and I know this project can help with that problem. I am committed to making helmets cool for kids and something that "everyone's doing", because surviving a bike accident is cool.

the plan of action:

My plan of action is to continue working through South Main Clinic in Salt Lake City, Utah which serves low income families. They have recently finished a study with some of their patients indicating the large numbers of families that do not purchase helmets. The clinic has begun to offer helmets at a low price, but without funding, they cannot be subsidized and those families that do not have the money to spend will be without this safety measure. The clinic provides education for these families about helmets and how to properly wear them. My plan is to use the grant money to help this program continue to provide these helmets to the community. This grant money will help tremendously.

how you can get involved:

Anyone can help in their own community by simply educating young ones about the importance of helmets and referring parents to a local bike store. Helmets are usually sold somewhere at a discount, but a project like this one can help those without resources to purchase one. Everyone can make helmets cool by wearing one.
