The Problem

I wanted to help the Haitians who survived the earthquake. They have little to no government help and many are still searching for their loved ones. A great number of those who have survived needed medical help, but availability of supplies was dwindling. Food is scarce and shelters are crowded. These people are struggling just to meet the everyday needs every human has. 5 out of every 6 Haitians live below the poverty line. The Haitian government was not prepared for the earthquake and had no means with which to help its people. The money cannot go to the Haitian government because it is so corrupt. While natural disasters killed over 220,000 people in 2008, this earthquake alone killed more than 300,000 people in just one country in just one night. I want to help these people get the food, shelter, and supplies htey need to survive.

Plan of Action

I talked to my friend Katherine and decided what we wanted to sell. We then spent a countless amount of hours working to make enough bracelets to meet the demand. We sold our bracelets for $2 at our school lunches and made roughly $700 doing that. We then rented our school's auditorium and decided to hold a benefit concert. We went to local businesses and asked them to donate whatever they felt was right to help in our silent auction. We had performers from the community come in for our concert and we charged $5 a ticket. We raised over $1000 with our benefit concert and silent auction.
