The Problem
Kim Young, resident of the Wake County area, was directly affected by the tornado spree that struck the Wake County/downtown Raleigh area on 4/16/11. Ms. Young and her husband lost their home in the tornado. Essentially, they lost everything -- all home photographs, family furniture, all clothing, food, everything necessary to function in the day-to-day life. If awarded the grant, I would donate the money directly to this family in order to help them attain the basics everyone needs to survive.
Plan of Action
I, including the other 32 girls move into Peace College dorms on 6/18/11, in order to compete for Miss North Carolina. The girls and I have already organized to bring gifts cards from different businesses such as, Wal-Mart, Target, Belk, etc., in order to provide this family with some of the necessities the family lost in the storm. The day we move in we are going to present these gift cards as a surprise to Ms. Young and her family. Likewise, I would like to surprise her with the $500 grant, and provide her with ample funding to truly get her “home” started again. Because, as we know, a house is much more than a building, rather it is a home – full of memories, people, and sentiments. In essence, a home is the space where bonds are created that surpass time.
