My freshmen year of High School I took a World Studies course. In this course I learned many things pertaining to the world and other cultures. In this class I also learned about the genocide that was going on Darfur, Sudan. It was just so heart breaking to hear what was going on in Sudan.
I was so sad to learn that over thousands of innocent people have been killed in Darfur, Sudan. Sadly the government of Sudan armed militia groups to exterminate all the black Sudanese in that region. Their homes and villages had been destroyed and burned down. Women and children were being raped. In addition the few people that survive ran to near by countries or refugee camps.
Unfortunately when they ran to the camps they found nothing but horror there. The camps were crowded and diseases spread quickly. Children were dying from diseases and starvition. As a human I could not live happily while other people were dying in Darfur. I especially felt sorry for the poor children, because I believe that every child should have the right to safety and security.
After I took this course I decided that I wanted to do something to help out people in Darfur. I decided to make a poster about the genocide and inform people about it and try to get them to help stop it. With the help of my friends I walked around the school informing people about the genocide in Darfur, I also kindly asked for a small donation. Fortunately I raised $200 and as a school we raised a total of $1,000. The school wrote a check to Doctors Without Borders Organization in Darfur Sudan.
This truly made me happy. Most important I believe that we live in this world together and we all need each other. If we all worked together and helped each other this world would be a better place.
