The Problem

Ten years of war have taken a toll on our military, veterans and their loved ones. The United States Military has lost more troops to suicide than in direct combat. We are asking more of our military service members than ever before. Military families on military bases have access to programs and activities. National Guard families often deal with the same issues, but they are more isolated. They sometimes do not have other families around them that understand what they are going through.

Plan of Action

My plan of action started with a focus on providing a day of fun and support for military families, including children of all ages. Existing community organizations were supportive of the project. Through networking, we built a base of support for my project that will provide volunteer manpower. I have negotiated with organizational leaders to achieve a common vision for this project. A page on Facebook was created by me to get out the word. Before the event, I plan to publicize it through newspapers, radio, and social media. Working with my community partners, we will be soliciting donations of time and resources from the community. We will organize a schedule for volunteers and ensure that there are adequate food and supplies. During the event, I also plan on helping children understand the basic care needed to help keep a horse alive and provide a bonding experience between the horse and child. I plan to leave a lasting impact on the community by providing an online forum for families to gather together and support each other whenever support is needed.
