There are millions of individuals in our country with developmental, intellectual, neurodevelopmental, and other disorders. Where are these people? How often do you see individuals with special needs out and about in our communities? Individuals with disabilities are the most underrepresented and underprivileged population in our country. From what I have observed, they are the least likely to obtain and maintain employment, have many negative stigmas attached to them, and are possibly the most ignored population. Look at your life. Think of the places you go. How many people with intellectual disabilities do you interact with in a day, week, month, or year? I see individuals with intellectual disabilities because it is my job to do so, but they are hidden from everybody else. There are thousands just in the county I work in. There are many things I wish to advocate for on their behalf, but I believe the first step is showing others that they exist; show the world that they are here, in our schools and neighborhoods, hidden.
