The Problem

In our community of Westfield, New Jersey, there is a National Guard Armory. The armory does not have a memorial in honor of the past, present, and future troops. It is important to have a public memorial to commemorate our troops, that everyone can enjoy. This memorial will provide a service to the community. It gives the people of our community a place to come and reflect, remember, and honor our soldiers from the community of Westfield. For our Girl Scout Silver Award Project, we chose to build a memorial for our local armory. The memorial will commemorate all the past, present and future soldiers defending our nation.

Plan of Action

The memorial will have a bench, flanked by two Yoshino Cherry Blossom Trees. The center piece will be a mosaic flag in front of the bench and Cherry Blossom Trees. On the bench there will be a plaque dedicating the memorial to the soldiers who have fought for our country. There are many steps to the project. The trees will be purchased from the Arbor Day Foundation. By purchasing from the Arbor Day Foundation we are supporting a non-profit organization. The flag will be made by embedding colored glass mosaic stone into cement shaped as a flag. The bench will be purchased from a local business, and the plaque will be engraved at a local business. To plant the trees we will get assistance from local landscapers.
