The Problem

The way to end poverty and hunger in Rwanda is through education. Women especially need education to ensure a bright future. WIthout education, women are left to sell their bodies to make small purchases like lotion. They have no means for providing for themselves or their families without education. Hope Village is a small orphanage in Rwanda that my family visited over Christmas break of 2009. There were three teenage girls who are in need of tuition to attend a local university. I am determined to raise enough money to send those three women to college. Their future is determined by my action. My action can only be continued with financial aid.The decision to give 100% of the proceeds back to the women of Hope Village leaves me with gaps to be filled regarding funds for materials. The materials for the crosses and bracelets I am making and selling are not expensive, but the costs add up over time.

Plan of Action

Greek life on college campuses is my target. I was in a sorority, but dropped it because art is more important to me. As a studio art major, I have connections to the faculty and venues for selling artwork on campus. My plan of action is to make wire crosses and jewelry with beads that I purchased in Rwanda during my recent visit. The wire crosses are beautiful for gardens and for interior decorations. I have made over $2,000 in the last year and a half selling these items previously. The profit was for personal needs in the past, but now 100% of the money made from these items will go to pay the three girls' college tuition.
