How altering social institutions indirectly and directly affect public health care systems in third world countries

the problem:

The issue I am trying to solve is public health care in third world countries. Because of corruption, these people living in developing nations are forced to continue living in poverty with little to no health care. There is no room for movement between social classes because the people living in poverty do not have the opportunity to succeed. From my time spent working in a health clinic in Ecuador, I've realized that other institutions in developing nations directly and indirectly affect the public health care system. By altering or changing other institutions, such as education, government, public waste management, etc. the need for public health care should drastically change. In addition, there will be more funding available to the health care system and more people living in poverty will be provided with basic health care needs.

why it's important:

This project is important to me because I am wanting to become a physician and travel with Doctors without Borders. I want to become the next Paul Farmer of my generation and change the world in some way. To me, poverty is one of the worst problems our world has today. It breaks my heart to see that over a billion people are living off of less than one dollar a day. Why is it fair for me to get an education and rise to my potential, when billions of others do not have that opportunity?

the plan of action:

I spent last year working at a health clinic in Ecuador, and was able to build several relationships through that experience. I got my friends involved as well as my college campus to adopt this clinic and help fund it. We are currently in the midst of collecting donations. Next summer, I will be traveling across the Mediterranean and North Africa in order to collect more data for my solutions. I want to get a broader aspect of the different types of public health care and where more help is needed. By observing institutions in several countries and using my knowledge from my volunteer work in Ecuador, I will be able to formulate more correlations between institutions and public health care. Based on these correlational findings, I then can institute more programs through my school and other organizations to begin funding these changes.

how you can get involved:

Any help would be amazing. Unfortunately, the biggest help would be funding my trip next summer across the Mediterranian and North Africa. Then from there, any funding for the study itself and publication would also work. Then any funding that could go to the Ecuador clinic for this year, would also be a big help. Next year, my organization on my campus will be choosing a new clinic/school/orphanage/etc to fund.
