The Problem

Our youth theatre drama club has found a perfect play--written by a teen (How to Be a Succesful Teen by Karin Evelyn Haugh: published by Baker Plays). We want to cast, rehearase and present the play as part of an after school date rape awareness event at our school on Dec. 3rd. Our class dealt with a boy from our class assaulting a girl from our class two years ago and this incident still bothers any of us who knew either of them. Henniker is a rural community in Central New Hampshire. We all know each other and mos tof us grew up together. According to our police chief--date rape is the fastest growing problem in our community. I'm an actor who has been involved with our youth theatre group for ten years and I'm interested in writing and directing plays that make a difference. The boy who got arrested for assaulting the girl was my best friend.

Plan of Action

We've found a play written by a 16 year old about date rape and want to present a reading of the play at our community school on Dec. 3rd to raise awareness. We'll do auditions--we have parts for up to 30 actors and then rehearse after school until Dec. 3rd when we'll do two public performances of our play--one right after school for students and one at night for families. We'll also be making up and posting flyers and sending information to our two local newspapers, the school paper, etc. I'll be the director of the presentation and one of the producers overseeing the entire project.

Project Updates

the Dec. readings really got alot of interest and we had some great comments from actors about the play and the issue it deals with in such a funny way...we are going to keep working on it throughout the winter in hopes of having a full production mounted by April 23rd.
