The Problem
Buffalo, a “rustbelt city” in Western New York, was once known for its thriving industry, but it is now sadly known only for Buffalo wings, diehard football fans and its proximity to Niagara Falls. The city faces many problems, the majority of which stem from its ever decreasing population; abandoned houses and empty lots line the city streets. This in turn leads to increased crime and drug abuse rates, lack of community involvement, and a whole slew of other societal problems. The housing crisis in Buffalo is not a new one, but there needs to be a plan implemented in order to ensure a long term solution to this crisis. Oftentimes the lack of knowledge about successfully maintaining a home leaves community residents at a loss even when the desire or financial capability of attempting repairs arises.
Plan of Action
In order to acquire the "How to" House, the plan is to buy property in Buffalo through a property foreclosure auction in mid October. Once owned, initial planning for repairs, garden construction, upgrades (insulation, water heating system, rainwater catchment, etc) will begin. Official rehabilitation of the house is set to begin in December where workshops will be offered for the community, so that they may gain the knowledge to rebuild their neighborhood!
