Hurricane Katrina relief show

the problem:

There were and still are, many people suffering from hurricane Katrina's effects. Many people had their homes destroyed. Jobs were lost. People and animals were killed. At the time people were still without food and water. Our goal was just to raise money to provide some food and water for a few people.

why it's important:

People were suffering. I was not. I wanted to help. At the time I knew some a few people that I was able to round together to feel for the cause and help out. I thought it would be easy to host an event and raise a hundred dollars or so.

the plan of action:

I called some people and told them we needed to help those in need. We brainstormed and decided to host a party to collect money. Two of us called and got donations from many local business in the form of gift certificates and food. Then one day at school someone gave me a flier for a performance their band was putting on and I asked him if his band would perform to raise money for our cause. They agreed and then my friend called a restaurant/bar and they gave us the space for free. Then we knew someone that printed fliers and we got fliers donated and we handed out fliers at schools and businesses in the area advertising our event. There was a great turn out and we had a raffle to give away the gift certificates that ranged from hair cuts to food to discounts of tax services. We were all amazed that we raised so many thousands. We then contacted the red cross and gave them a check.

how you can get involved:

Don't underestimate yourself. Find people in need and find others to help you brainstorm on how you can help. There are victims every day from natural disasters and man caused disasters that need help. If you have time get out there and do something.
