The Problem
My church, First Presbyterian of Kingwood, has helped me get where i am today. First I was invited to take a weekend to truly experience homelessness in Philadelphia. The sixteen students and adults involve in the trip understand when I say that I cannot even begin to explain how the trip broke us. In the words of my youth minister, "I have received laser eye surgery". Without this trip I would still be able to ignore the brokenness in the world. Now I feel i must do what I can to fix it. My second inspiration happened during a recent mission trip that served the homeless and poverty stricken residents of Jacksonville, Florida. i had the pleasure of meeting a Ms. Shirley Ann Green. She is a poet, mother, and homeless. Her unbreakable love and trust in God blew me away. Though she may look broken, I believe she is more complete then me. These catalysts led me to want to change the way that people think about everyone, especially the homeless. The catalyst behind my decision to form our organization, I AM HUMAN LIKE YOU, came from a homeless woman we met on the streets of Jacksonville, Florida named Shirley Green. Shirley read us her beautiful poems that talked about God, Love and treating others with respect.
Plan of Action
With her constant motivation and help from college friends, we have begun to expand through Texas and Jacksonville. We have printed shirts and rubber bracelets, as well as hand painted totes with our slogan, I AM HUMAN LIKE YOU, Shirley’s name, and some of her poems to help spread the message. Downtown trips are made with these totes filled with some of the dozens of pounds of hotel soaps and other toiletries that have been donated along with lunches for anyone who wants one. We are also working with Star of Hope to host an event for the residents there. My hope and long-term goal is to one day have buildings across the world that are centers of esteem for those down on their luck or otherwise needy to come and be loved, listened to, and receive help getting back on their feet. Shirley has given me strength I need to start every day with a smile and battle any obstacle that hinders me from spreading her message, that we are all human and deserve respect.
