The Problem
More than ever, young people today strive to make a positive change in the world. Undergraduates, in particular, have great visions and goals of how they can change the world. However, despite their passion and creativity, they often lack the resources, knowledge, networks, and mentors necessary to turn an idea into reality. While many organizations exist to fill this void, many students are not aware of them. In essence, the fragmentation of both opportunities and support for aspiring social entrepreneurs stifles innovation and stalls social change. Through our summit, we hope to bring organizations and young visionaries together, facilitating the development of the critical link between ideas and resources, and supplying students with the tools to act effectively.
Plan of Action
In the fall of 2010, we organized the first undergraduate conference on social entrepreneurship at Harvard: the Igniting Innovation Summit on Social Entrepreneurship. This conference emerged from a grassroots effort to unite students, entrepreneurs, and professors, who all shared a common interest in igniting social change. It was such a success that we are planning to formalize and expand the event this year, bringing together participants from all over the country to learn, interact, build partnerships, and gain valuable knowledge. We envision the day as a synergy of forces that will catalyze students’ ideas by giving them the tools and resources to act. Further, we are committed to the growth of this event in the future, creating continuity and community around social entrepreneurship at the undergraduate level.
