The Problem
The iLead Black Student Leadership Summit was designed to create an inspiration to lead, achieve, succeed, and serve. In the current community, a lot of African-American students were ignorant about a lot of aspect within leadership and personal development. In talking with a few people, it was evident that it wasn't just within my community that there we students in need of "inspiration" before completing college, and now - leaving high school. The Summit's missions are to: Discover the impact of the leaders of today on our lives tomorrow; Network with our counterparts within the Black leadership realm; Explore diverse and innovative ways of translating plans into action; Unite leaders to create a networking foundation; Enhance the visibility of the Black Student leader; After the Summit, the participants will be able to: Identify the long-term impacts and challengers of the Black leader; and Describe, recognize, and effectively respond to the nature of their leadership position
Plan of Action
For this particular project, I started working backwards from the desired result. After I wrote out the desired result, I then described the steps that were needed to ensure the result was met and completed the "major event plan" for the Summit. After the MEP was finalized, I presented the proposal to the Director of the Center for African-American Students Programs and the Vice President of Multicultural Affairs for Marshall University and selected my assistant director. After weeks of preliminary planning, it was time to translate the plan into action. I began to network with universities and student organizations within the state of West Virginia, neighboring states, and the other schools that I had connections with and started looking for presenters/facilitators. After the curriculum was finalized and programming was selected, I selected three interns for the Summit and recruited volunteers to assist in the staffing. Finalized the last minute items and prepared for the fire to be ignited!!!
Just on one campus alone, the impact was huge. Student participation in organizations increased among the participants of the Summit, as well as student activity within the campus volunteer opportunities.
