The Problem

Within the United States and especially in urban settlement areas such as those found in Hartford, CT or Brooklyn, NY, there is a lack of community between the multitudes of different people with different backgrounds (ie. religious or cultural). Without a strong foundation in a community, adults and youth alike are less empowered to assist in the overall improvement of the community and the well being of its people. It is when a community does not act as one that we begin to see the signs of poverty, inequalities and lack of proficiency within an educational system, and the deterioration of moral principles.

Plan of Action

One method of improving a community begins with the education of its youth. Youth have an energy unparalleled in strength, harvesting this energy and using it as the primal force for empowering a community is the best way to accomplish our goal for global prosperity. The first step I took in improving the two communities I lived in involved moral and character building classes for the children and youth of those communities. In the local parks, or in one of the homes of the many wonderful hosts, I would teach these classes for kids that involved acts of service, group activities oriented towards their interests and aspirations, lessons about the importance of a unified and strong community, and about love for one another and developing strong friendships. These kids were then mentally "armed" with the tools necessary to begin improving their community from the ground up, and share their knowledge and service to others!
