The idea started because my mom is a 3rd grade teacher. We talk about how to be safer driver on the way to school and the question came up how we could start knowing what situations to expect and what to do about them before they happen. As we discussed different situations and what we would do if we were put in them she decided to try it out on her students to help them become better readers. My mom made comic strips of safe driving proceedures that covered her class reading skills, such as (i.e. inferencing, predicting, sorting, KWL charts, etc.)and they would have to put the comic strips in order according to the way you might get into a car and the things you do before starting the engine. Other ideas were having the students look at 2 or 3 comic strips and then having them predict what will happen next if this is what the driver does (both good and bad situations)or have the students make up their own comic strip and then let another student work with it (this is what is attached for you to look at). Her class enjoyed it so well that the other 3rd grade clsses tried it. This could carry on to many different age groups and get more indepth each year. Next year my mom is going to let her high school mentor students present this and have them talk about situations they have faced and what they did. So my mom really took the idea and went with it but she said I was he inspiration because of the way I drive and my good choice I make.
