Increase Your Green! 2008 Smencil Sale at Kent Place

the problem:

In high school pens and pencils are certainly not in short supply. Everyone uses them for all kinds of reasons. The majority of pencils are still made out of wood, and with the large number of students each using a large number of pencils, the amount of "trees" consumed quickly rises.

why it's important:

"Smencils" are pencils made from recycled newspaper that are incensed with various smells. There are pencils that smell like oranges, cotton candy, chocolate, watermelon, grape, cherry, among others. The Environmental Club at Kent Place School held a "smencil" sale in order to get students to use recycled products. By reducing the amount of wooden pencils consumed, we reduce the amount of trees "cut" down.

the plan of action:

The Environmental Club bought multiple buckets of smencils from the Smencil company and found time during the school day to sell them to students. Members of the environmental club led the sale, and many many students bought smencils for themselves. Students in every grade use their smencils to date, and have become more aware about using recycled products.

how you can get involved:

Others can help by holding their own Smencil sale or promoting recycled products of all types.
