The Problem
I am trying to solve the problem of healthy animals being killed every day in San Bernardino County shelters. This area has an extremely high "kill-rate", and there has even been evidence of abuse at the Devore shelter. I have been helping my mom rescue animals for over a year now. We pull animals from high risk shelters and relocate them to sanctuaries or non-kill shelters. We also donate blankets and food to the local shelters, and we foster animals that are set to be euthanized. My mom just got laid off from her job, and we are worried about how we are going to continue helping the animals in our community. I used my allowance for a year to help a dog that needed surgery to live. This cause is very important to me. I want to be a vet when I am out of high school.
Plan of Action
My plan of action is to make flyers to post at the local schools asking for donations of blankets, food, and toys for the local animal shelters. I am also going to email the Director of Animal Control Services, to ask him to look into different options instead of having such a high kill-rate in this community. I am also going to speak at local organizations to ask for donations to the local shelters. I am planning on volunteering my time to help clean cages, show adoptable animals at pet shows, and socialize cats at the Riverside Humane Society this summer.
