Integration of the Korean American Community

the problem:

The under-involvement of Korean Americans in their communities which results in under-representation and unheard voices. This leads to Korean Americans feeling like second-class citizens in the United States.

vital stats:

people impacted:

200

people involved:

32

why it's important:

Because I was born in South Korea but spent the majority of my life in the United States. I have been noticing a lot of problems within the community, particularly the way Korean Americans isolate themselves from the broader community. I would like for this program to help make them more pro-active in getting their voice heard.

the plan of action:

Educate and raise awareness within young Korean Americans to assist their community in voicing their needs. By addressing the issue of under-representation we hope to help create a well-rounded society and one in which every American is equally represented.

how you can get involved:

Others can help by themselves recognizing this as an issue. But also my making congressional representatives and other people in our communities aware of this problem of under-representation.

This sounds interesting. I think part of the problem with many communities is the idea that they are not personally invested in their communities. If you show them that their voices do matter, that may cause a shift. Good luck!

Are you having trouble spreading awareness given the ongoing problems with North Korea and the way most people perceive the situation? How do you talk about it?

I agree. Thank you for your encouragement!

Yes, one of the issues held close in the Korean American community's heart is the issue of Divided Families. Current older generation Korean Americans are the last survivors of the Korean War. Many of them would like to know the fate of their families in North Korea but are unable to do so.
Many Americans have a hard time seeing this as a significant issue because they were hardened by the Korean War and by the ongoing nuclear weapons threat. Our initiative will help put a face on the tragedy of families that were divided without warning by the onset of the Korean Civil War.
