The Problem

The Alternative Spring Break Program, advised by the Center of Community Service at Northeastern University, provides students and staff members the opportunity to travel during spring break and serve a community. This year, 13 Northeastern students and I are planning to volunteer with an international organization called Volunteer in Jamaica Opportunity Network (VIJON). We will work with children in the Sandy Bank primary school of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. We plan to repair the damage created by the Hurricane, teach the students basic computer skills, and build a recreational playground. We are fundraising to cover the costs of travel, lodging, food, supplies, and program fees. Through my participation in this trip, I will learn not only about the historical, cultural, social, political, linguistic, and economic aspects affecting St. Elizabeth, but I will also learn more about myself and develop my leadership and communication skills. This opportunity will truly enrich my experience as Computer Engineering student, and it will assist me in building lasting relationships with community members, program directors, and passionate students.
