The Problem
[IN]Visible Magazine is a student-run publication that was developed specifically to open up a free and comfortable dialogue about body image on Scripps campus. It is a growing community project that has been established as a positive asset for change so that young women attending Scripps have a place for discourse to fight being barraged by society’s ill placed standards of superficial beauty. We are a group of young and aspiring student volunteers, looking to make an impact on reducing the perceived significance of outward appearances in the community and maintaining a campus dialogue in questioning stereotypes and addressing ourselves as empowered individuals.
Plan of Action
The past three semesters have given us a great deal of positive feedback. Avantika Saraogi, a Scripps sophomore stated, "“[IN]Visible is a great resource that encourages women to get to know their bodies, and more importantly, their inner selves.” Lindsey Cook, a Scripps Senior said, “It’s so hard to get a hold of one, but every time I do I spend hours reading it.” While [IN]Visible Magazine has established a small presence on campus, we are looking to create an even larger impact by obtaining the funds to print enough copies so that all 946 Scripps women can have a copy of their own. Our next step in our plan of action is to apply for a DoSomething Seed Grant, in order to come closer to our goal of being able to print 950 copies for the Fall Semester of 2011.
