The Problem
My father is currently stationed in Baghdad, Iraq and has witnessed the harsh environment children go to school in. He and I discussed ways to help these children and decided that collecting school supplies was a way to maybe get these children interested in school/education and out of the rough streets of Baghdad.
Plan of Action
With the help of my sorority, Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Service Sorority, we decided to put together a collection of school supplies. We placed boxes through out the Music Department at Virginia Tech and utilized facebook and email to reach out for donations. Over the course of 2 months we were able to collect over 500 school supplies (ranging from crayons to markers to paper). We will begin a 2 week process of packaging and mailing the school supplies to a military base in Baghdad, Iraq who will then have local Iraqi Generals deliver the supplies to 3 schools in the area.
