The Problem

I went to Jamaica in the Spring of 2008 to the capital and biggest city on the island: Kingston, Jamaica. I feel in love with the culture, the people, and the food. During the 14 days I was there, I witnessed poverty beyond anything I have ever seen: garbage would be lit on the side of the road because there was no place to dump it, the kids would be wearing raggy clothes, and the classrooms had desks with holes in them from being old. I believe I can do, as Bob Marley said, "Help the children, help them right... C'mon and smile in Jamaica" I went with Pacific Northwest Circle-K International, helping Kingston's Builder's Club add a "Tux Shop" to Allman Town Primary School. Kids from the neighborhood helped out as well as the Rastamen in the nearby homes. When my club came to Kingston, we sewed pencil pouches for the kids. Word spread with the kids and soon the entire community of kids from the school from Allman Town came out to help us with the painting, sanding of picnic benches, and weeding of the garden. On the last day, we gave out the pencil pouches with 2 fresh yellow pencils, yet we didn't have enough for everyone. Seeing the look on those kids faces that didn't get one just killed me. I wanted to do something about it, but we didn't have any matieral to sew anymore.

Plan of Action

I have a couple of friends that live in Kingston, Claredon, and Spanish Town that I met through my trip to Kingston last Spring. I have been in contact with them since the trip. They will help me distribute the supplies, books, and money I send to the school they know is most in poverty. The steps I will take to help the kids out in Jamaica would be: 1.) create bracelets and necklaces 2.) sell them through local stores, farmer's market, and the online web-site people can check out 3.) create a list of supplies the children need the most 4.) send it to them, have my friends take pictures, and show the world the effect of purchasing one bracelet
