The Problem

Last July, I was just your average American teenager. But as the months progressed I have blossomed into a leader, a woman, a role model. It all started one day at a Girl Scout convention when my leader brought up the Gold Award. The Gold Award is the highest Girl Scout honor. For the award you must provide a service to the community and with that said, I created the Jammin’ Jumpstart Program. Although my program started as an award it has become a central part of my life. Jackie Robinson once said, “Life is not important except in its impact on other lives”. The Jammin’ Jumpstart Program is a project dedicated to informing Greater San Antonio youth (specifically children of Greater San Antonio) about the importance of nutrition and exercise. This information is of great importance due to the alarming obesity rate in this area, which is the highest in San Antonio. This project was made to expose these children to healthy options, a healthy way of living, and the Jammin’ slogan: “Eat Healthy. Drink Healthy. Be Healthy, STAY Healthy”, and it had. The children received a jump rope and reusable water bottle which they can use infinitely, encouraging them to drink more water and exercise. But the children did not only go home with giveaways; they went go home with a new way of life. I chose jump ropes because many of the children do not have neighborhood playgrounds and playing in the streets is not an option and with a jump rope a child can jump safely inside their home, having fun and getting an excellent exercise. My program is significant because without our health we have nothing. I am a firm believer in the point that everything begins when we are younger, work ethic, manners, and bad habits. I believe that the route to a healthy lifestyle starts at our youth and this is the basis of the Jammin’ Jumpstart Program.

Plan of Action

Currently, I have informed over 80 children in the area and I plan to inform many more. Whether it be my career decision or just a hobby; the Jammin’ Jumpsatrt program will be apart of my life for years to come.
