why it's important:

This issue is important to me because I am good friends with Nelly Gramp, the founder of Joey's Eagles. She lost her son Joey to a childhood cancer. Nelly has always been there for me and my family, we lost my father to colon cancer about seven years ago. In that way I feel connected to her cause, a fellow survivor of the aftermath of a loved one fallen to this disease. It is my goal to bring awareness to the public about cancer, and to raise money for research, treatments, and support. As an organization we try to help the children deal with their illnesses, provide support for their families, and become their friends.

the plan of action:

We are trying to create a home for these kids, the home will be a safe haven for them to grow as a community of fighters. We are planning to set up a treatment center in the house, an area for the parents to wait for the kids, a support group area for the parents and kids, and a play area for the kids to get to know each other and feel normal at least for their stay here.

how you can get involved:

This project can help others immensely. With a home the children will be able to feel normal and interact with kids their age going through the same experiences. Their parents will be able to get support and share their fears. They will be able to form a community and a support system to know that they are not alone.
So far Joey's Eagles has hosted spaghetti dinners since 1996 to raise money for families with a loved one with cancer to be able to pay for their treatments. They also help raise money for the families through generous donations. This is a program I feel strongly about because community is something we cannot live without. Being around others and feeling excepted and supported during our hardships can help us come out triumphant and hopeful for a better tomorrow and a more bearable today.
