The Problem
Supporting low income, minority, gang effected youth in San Diego to transition out the justice system. Our goal is to support transition aged, 16-21 year olds into adulthood and reduce their liklihood for future justice system involvment.
Plan of Action
The JOLT Urban Farm Project helps youth through job training and youth development activities by learning about green jobs and urban agriculture. The project works by involving youth in a local movement working to transform the local Southeastern San Diego community into a sustainable and ecological center of commerce. Participants will be involved in the local community’s efforts to promote food security, wellness through nutrition and environmental stewardship. Youth take part in hands-on training where they learn to work and cultivate a garden space, participate in the staffing of local farmers markets, and support other local community gardens. Youth have been planning and implementing a communal urban garden space located on the property adjacent to the agencies’ parking lot. In addition, youth take part in classroom instruction and in-the-garden instruction focused on gardening skills and entrepreneurship. Youth earn a weekly stipend for their training time.
