The Problem
Jumpstart is a national organization to help preschool students get ready for Kindergarten. We help these children by promoting literacy and a lot of literacy fun-filled activities. It is after school, twice a week for 2 hours. Jumpstart was founded by 2 Yale students in 1993 and has become a big organization since then. Since 1993, over 70,000 children have been helped. These children are from lowincome families and are evaluated by theur teachers to do Jumpstart, unless they are in the new full classroom curriculum model. College students as well as members want these preschool students to be ready to start Kindergarten fully prepared when the time comes.
In tons of communities, as well as the one I am in, there are low-income families that do not have the time or means to help their children. By just 2 hours, twice a day we help these children with these fun activities to help them in literacy and writing.
Plan of Action
This is my second year in Jumpstart and I am now a team leader. I love the curriculum but sometimes it's great to tweak it a little to make certain parts of the lesson plan even more fun. I do not take learning experiences for granted because even in different centers like dramatic play, I take advantage of using the new vocabulary they have learned that day. In the writing center, we have books that they can make so they can be illustrators and authors. In puzzles the children can play games with letters such as matching games or alphabet puzzles.
