Just Kidding: Striving to work towards an accepting world

the problem:

Bullying happens every day in every school.
While teachers may talk about bullying prevention, the students are the key defense in stopping this behavior. Enabling students to identify bullying and giving them the courage to speak up when they witness a peer being bullied is essential.

why it's important:

Through drama, Just Kidding addresses the issue of bullying and give examples of how to deal with harassment.
Just Kidding is intended to identify various forms of harassment and the negative consequences of those actions. It helps students understand that that behavior does not have to be tolerated, even if it is “just a joke.” Also, students watching the play will see a scenario of how to deal with various kinds of harassment.

the plan of action:

The cast is rehearsing now for an upcoming performance.
We are learning more about how our behavior influences others. This makes us extra alert to spot bullying in the hallways, on the bus, or in the locker rooms.

how you can get involved:

Others are working behind the scenes. The performance of Just Kidding is the tool we will use to open the discussion of bullying prevention. Our presence and examples in the middle school classrooms will be the framework students can build on to use positive peer pressure to stop bullies in their tracks. Who knows, maybe more doors will be opened to invite speakers or start other anti-bullying programs.

The other week, there was a fight in the hallway between two middle schoolers. I was disappointed that they weren't able to talk out their differences and had to use violence. I talked to another student who had seen the play and also witnessed the fight. He reassured me that he remembered the lessons from "just kidding" and it made a difference to him.

The reality is that we sometimes forget lessons taught to us, and most need to be reminded many, many times until we can put life lessons into practice. That is a part of growing up, and we all make mistakes.

On November 20th, we staged our first performance of "just kidding". The middle school students were very attentive and actually liked the show. The teachers, school board members, principal, and superintendent were very impressed with the show as well, and are encouraging us to take our play to other schools.

In the days following the assembly, there were at least five different kids who went to a teacher and admitted to being bullied. It was great to know that the message got across to the students and that they decided to take action.

We’re all very excited with the responses from the teachers and students and hope other schools will welcome us to perform.

Comments

we had a bullying program that came to my middle school but it was SUPER cheesy. this sounds like it would be really good. keep us updated on how many kids you are able to reach and how your program develops. :)

This play was well written an kept their attention. The kids laughed, but were extremely quiet during the serious parts. Our "We Care" team talked to the kids afterwards to let them know help is available.
