The Problem
After Hurricane Katrina, many people were left without a home. Even 4 years later, there is still much work to be done around Louisiana and Mississippi in order for people to resume 'normal' life. The youth group that I traveled with went to a city called Lakeshore, Mississippi. With the help of a local church, and the selfless volunteering of many, Lakeshore, Mississippi will someday be completely rebuilt. As for now, the biggest issue facing locals is gathering enough food and supplies to simply make it through the week.
Plan of Action
Lakeshore Baptist Church was the bright light after Katrina. It worked hard to recruit volunteers to immediately begin rebuilding Lakeshore. Volunteers, such as myself, help by sorting and gathering food and supplies for locals, building or taking down houses, clearing plots of land for construction, or even the simple task of talking to the townspeople. Interacting with people is amazing; it shows that the work that I helped to accomplish there really was making an impact. People cried at the sight of a new foundation being built. For many of the people in Lakeshore, a fresh batch of volunteers each week may mean a bit of hope, a new beginning.
