The Problem
As the cost of health care continues to soar, business organizations are faced with the task of continuing to provide sufficient care while still maintaining a profit.
Rather than cutting health benefits, as many companies have done our goal is to evoke a greater sense of responsibility while still maintaining and even boosting long-term profits. A prevention-focused health program that is based on holism, wellbeing and health management is a solution that addresses both employee and corporate needs.
Many employees, especially those situated in densely populated urban areas such as Los Angeles, face challenges that are unique to their work culture. For example, a lack of healthy dining options, exercise space, health education and access to care are all barriers that make it difficult for working individuals to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
A corporate wellness program such the "Keep On P.A.C.E." program we students designed for P.A.C.E. (a non-profit government organization that works to provide water, electric, and heating resources to underserved communities) addresses the specific issues and challenges the employees at P.A.C.E. face, are concerned about and should be aware of.
Plan of Action
Our goals is to provide an incentive-based wellness program with formal education to workers in a corporate setting. To accomplish these goals, we teamed up with the Pacific Asian Consortium and Employment (P.A.C.E.) in downtown Los Angeles. With the help of P.A.C.E. executives we implement an employee health promotion program in which undergraduate students from UCI present workshops to PACE employees on topics ranging from stress to mental health.
Each week a new topic is covered. Reading materials are printed and posted and e-mailed out to employees that provide topic-based information. Then on Friday a presentation is given where students interact with the employees. There is a combination of PowerPoint presentations, physical demonstrations, team activities, question and answer sessions and prizes that are given out.
An example of topics we covered in our first 5 weeks include:
Week #1 – Stress
Week #2 – Headache
Week #3 – Chronic Pain
Week #4 – Mental Health
Week #5 – Vision
