The Problem
My venture is about getting elementary school kids interested in science. School, especially with all the emphasis these days on standardized testing, is converging towards textbook and reading based learning; however the beauty of science is that it is the study of the world around us. Kids need to receive more outside of the classroom exposure to science, and they should be able to learn it in a hands on, interactive manner – the way science is supposed to be.
Plan of Action
Kids Are Scientists Too (KAST) unites high school students to bring science programs to their local elementary schools. The KAST core team designs original, creative plans for 1hour long interactive learning sessions to be implemented by branch leaders of KAST at each high school. Once every two weeks, a KAST branch leader leads their team of high school students to a designated elementary school and conducts a free, currently open to all 5th graders, science program. We also offer free science support services such as tutoring, and organize a semi annual science fair for Elementary School students in our county.
