20why it's important:
In the past, I felt called to think up new and successful charity events through school and the community. From penny drives, which benefitted the Red Cross and victims of September 11th, to car washes that aided the victims of a massive tsunami in Indonesia, I have found numerous ways to help those less fortunate.
the plan of action:
I first heard about the malaria epidemic in Africa when my sister showed me a depressing article in Newsweek Magazine that expressed deep concern over the disease and the millions worldwide dying from it. Over the next several months, I worked hard researching malaria through websites and professional organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This was extremely helpful, for it offered not only medical information about malaria, but insight as to its global spread. One of the most shocking pieces of data that I found was that every thirty seconds, a child dies of malaria. This fact struck deep within me and I began to research what was being done to save the lives of these children. It turns out that numerous aid groups have been fighting malaria for some time, and that there were many high profile celebrities, like Bill Gates, who were using their talents to raise awareness. I contacted a local charity, Medical Teams International, and was told (to my surprise) that a child’s life could be saved for only $15.50, which bought them an anti-malaria medication and a chemically treated mosquito net to avoid future infection!
