The Problem

My organization reaches out to many impoverished communities in Guatemala. We usually work in one village consecutively for 3 to 4 years helping them with any major development projects that they need help with (i.e. water tanks for households, solar paneled lighting, building constructions) We work WITH people from these communities to instill in them a sense of responsibility for their own community and a common goal to see it prosper. After a few years of working with them, they learn to work together as an organized community, addressing problems to appointed individuals who can lead in finding solutions and petitioning for local government funding and assistance. Become valuable assets to their own community inspires individuals to strive for better lifestyles and better education, which opens them up to many more opportunities.

Plan of Action

My organization/project has already been ongoing for five years now. We are a group of American missionaries and Guatemalan missionaries that work together to helpe individuals living in impoverished villages in Guatemala. Our volunteers can all say that this has been an eye-opening experience for them. So many Americans don't know how privileged they are until they see poverty firsthand. Even our Guatemalan missionaries who are mostly from wealthier families can agree that this mission has instilled in them a new love and compassion for the poor right in their own country.
