The Problem
Poverty in the Dominican Republic is growing. People are starving to death, living with no houses, and no education, and dying of diseases that could easily be treated with medication. Mothers are having children with birth defects due to poor nutrition. They are living in shanty towns in scrap wood housing with dirt floors and no running water.
Plan of Action
One week a year a group i am involved in goes to La Romana to lend our services. Being an aspiring medical student i travel with the medical team to open clinics in "bateys" out in the sugar cane fields, where poverty is the worst. We bring carpenters to build schools and repair hospitals. Teachers to help other aspiring teachers in the bateys to help provide better educuation. We also bring games and toys for children, because a lot have never experienced having a real toy.
The other 51 weeks of the year we raise money and collect supplies to bring down. Anything from tooth brushes, schoool supplies, to baby clothes we gather to bring down. Last year alone we flew down over 1500 lbs of goods to donate to the Dominican people.
