The Problem

There is a lack of safe and fun social opportunities for youth in Lafayette, Colorado. There are also few educational and leadership opportunities for youth outside of school. We believe that by providing such opportunities, we will encourage positive and healthy behavior among youth in Lafayette. When young people are empowered to get involved in their community and interact with other teens that they wouldn't normally have the chance to meet, they are able to build self-esteem and positive relationships.

Plan of Action

We opened the youth center in January. We are currently open after school three days a week. Some of the programs we offer are gardening, homework help, community service projects, life skill workshops, sex education classes, movie nights, and mural painting. We have a youth board of directors comprised of local high school students who advise and direct the youth center. Right now we're focusing on ensuring the sustainability of the center. We're fundraising for a paid-staff member and for fun activities during the summer.
