The Problem
Latinos and Native American are the most unerrepresented racial group in the College of Business at Michigan State University but also in the Business world. We want to increase awareness about education paths after high school, develop students professionaly though resume workshops and helping students gain networks with company recruiters.
Plan of Action
This has been an ongoing project of the Native American and Hispanic Business Students. For the Native Outreach it took: Having meetings with leaders on the reservation.
Setting up a date where NAHBS could come up to the reservation.
Funding the project through company sponsorship to cover the food costs, transportation, and gifts given to the students.
The first day with the students we asked how many were planning to attend college out of the 25 students there 2 raised their hand. After workshops on resumes, public speaking, and achievement in high school we asked again and all the students said they wanted to attend college. I remember there was one student in particular who I spoke to about finding scholarships for her athletic ability.
Latino Outreach is a bit different.
We contacted the director of the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation (DHDC) to set up multiple dates when NAHBS could go to the DHDC. At each visit a different company came to present on topics from diversity to public speaking. Our goal was to prepare the students for a case competition for the last visit. The wining team would be brough to Michigan State University for a college day. Many students had never visited Michigan State's campus and did not know what a case competion was. It was our first opportunity to work with the Latino community in Detroit to expand their awareness about business and encourage them to apply for college. Many NAHBS members were able to reach to the students on a personal level because of their own background and stories of struggle.
