Leading Our Tomorrow was build on pile of "no's" but with the dedicated high school students involved, what was thought as a dream in 2007 became reality in the summer of 2008. Under the leadership of both Founder Sophia Bellegarde (17 yrs old) and Co-Founder Tiffany Haynes, Leading Our Tomorrow was coming together little by little. Getting our first donation of $500 from a foundation that believed in our dreams, we were dedicated to making a difference. After the first donation, Hands On Miami as well as the Department of Education in Miami Dade County donated a grant of $750 in supplies. Florida International University (FIU) supplied us with a facility to hold our students. Little by little the community got involved, whether being a recipient of our services or simply a volunteer with a passion for art and leadership that felt the urge to share that passion. L.O.T. recipients participated on a field trip to the Miami Art Museum (MAM) and learned numerous steps in enhancing leadership skills as well as well as self esteem through the many lessons and projects that were taught last summer. In the end, every participant was overwhelmed by the success of the program that we even had a waiting list for incoming kids for the following summer. Leading Our Tomorrow rewarded both children in volunteers that summer with awards and even scholarships from the little funds that we were fortunate enough to have.
