The Problem
The L.E.A.P. Organizaiton solves three primary needs by providing housing to low income single parents and day care assistance. In addition to single parents housing, our program mentors high school students ages 14-18 through tutoring, workshops, effective decision making, support, leadership and citizenship development.
Plan of Action
To combat the housing issue, we have acquired three acres of land in which we will be building apartments on as the funding becomes available. In the meanwhile we currently have 1 unit to begin aiding our struggling single parent families who find themselves in dire straits. As far as the day care we are working with a local church to rent the facility during the day to operate the Learning Center out of which will charge parents for its services at a rate well below market value and accept volunteer hours as way to earn additional discounts. To address the youth concern we provide a host of programs and services free of charge such as mentoring, tutoring, and scholarships for students within the program. They also go on field trip, college visits, and host events.
We just recently received our 501c3 status in July which was back dated to April 29, 2009 and will be applying for additional grants for funding the development of the apartment housing and day care operations expenses.
In May, of this year we hosted our first annual High School Step Show competition where we awarded cash prizes to the 1st and 2nd place winners to support the performing arts in their schools and provide the youth with an outlet to showcase their talent. We had 4 schools participate and over 250 spectators in attendance.
In July of 2010, we hosted a back to school basketball tournament with over 12 teams. Registration and admission into the tournament was donated school supplies. We collected over 269 packs of paper and random supplies to distribute in two local housing projects for the students that were less fortunate and unable to get free school supplies at other Back to School Bashes due to transportation. At the tournament we also awarded a scholarship to one of the students in the LEAP Intern Program who had recently graduated high school.
