Literacy in Uganda

Check out our videos!

the problem:

Since the national language in Uganda is English, all the school exams are written in English. Ugandan children are raised learning their respective languages and if their parents don't speak English then many never get any exposure to the language before begining primary school. And consequently, do poorly on exams because they can't keep up with the pace of the curriculum. My community was a village in Uganda called Kayunga.

why it's important:

It's important that these children are given an opportunity to learn. It doesn't seem fair that because they were born to a poor family with little to no educational background that they are destined to fail. My project was to fill the gap for children, giving them an opportunity to learn outside the classroom. This addresses the problem stated above in that it provides children with English, facilitating their learning of the language, and in return allowing them to excel in school and later on in life.

the plan of action:

In this project, I provided schools with a library where they can practice reading and the teachers can use the books as teaching aids.

how you can get involved:

Many from the United States assisted in sending children's books and donations for the cost of shipping and building the libraries.
