The Problem
Young children need to develop abilities and skills that have application in many other areas of the curriculum. Art in activities help children develop cognitive, social and motor abilities. Most importantly children need to develop an appreciation for art, and the confidence to express their own thoughts and feelings through art. This integration of making and enjoying art in the early childhood classroom will result in the all-sided development of children. Making art builds children’s self-esteem by helping giving them opportunities to express what they are thinking and feeling. Therefore, the problem I am trying to solve is to make sure the students at Stepping Stones Preschool have the proper tools and supplies to help them experience art in many ways any help them develop in cognitive, social, motor abilities, and grow in self-esteem.
Plan of Action
My plan is to reorganize the Art Room at Stepping Stones Preschool and obtain useful supplies and equipment for the children to use daily. I would like to purchase an art easel that is stable, a new art supply storage area that is easily accessible to the children, restock some consumable supplies, musical instruments, a puppet theatre and some puppets. I would also like to put together four or five artists’ knapsacks, for children’s use at home to involve families in classroom art activities. These knapsacks, which would include items such as paint and paper or modeling clay, would be available for children to check out and share with their families.
