Students in my 8th grade US History class will learn about the ongoing conflicts where US troops are currently deployed including geography location and hardships on troops being away from families. Guest speakers from the military will come into the classroom to give the students a first hand account of what it is like on the battlefield and being away from home. They will describe the importance of receiving letters and care packages from others back home. Students will begin their process by writing letters to troops describing their appreciation for their sacrifice. Students will also create care packages with items such as non-perishable food, wet wipes, writing and mailing items to communicate with family members, reading materials and more. The items will then be shipped in bulk to designated military posts overseas.
