The Problem

Three years after Hurricane Katrina and a poorly engineered levy flooded the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, only about twenty percent of the population has returned home. There are no schools, grocery stores, or hospitals in the immediate area. The area is still completely devastated.

Plan of Action

From February to August of 2008 I lived in the Lower Ninth Ward as a long term volunteer with the rebuild organization Lowernine.org. I was among the first volunteers for the organization and contributed to the initial establishment of the organization in the community. I worked as a crew leader at several construction sites where I taught short term volunteers how to rebuild homes. I helped convert ruined lots into community farms to make up for the lack of available fresh and affordable food. I created and directed a summer camp for children in the community so parents could go to work knowing their children were in a safe and educational environment.
