The Problem
In Savannah, where I live and attend the Savannah College of Art and Design as a part time student, we have a few Art related issues.
1. Funding and support for the Arts in the public schools dwindles, and there are many children who have never done an art project beyond drawing with pencil! Art and the process of making something is impowering, exciting and self esteem building. It's important to bring art to as many young children as possible.
2. The Savannah College of Art and Design is one of the biggest art schools in the world. with over 8000 students in Savannah alone, there are A LOT of art supplies. Many of them get discarded after students change their areas of focus or move away. It is unfortunate and unreasonable for art suplies to be thrown out when in they could be collected and redistributed to the local children who otherwise have nothing to work with.
LOOP IT UP SAVANNAH provides solutions to both of these issues!
1. we offer 4 art classes each week to local kids. we encourage the exploration of different art materials and each child discovering their personal artistic style and interests. We also teach traditional crafts such as knitting, quilting and weaving. We work to build safe and positive art studio environments where the children have fun, make beautiful things and feel valued by their community.
2. We have built a Community Art Materials Center! Members of the Savannah Community (largely SCAD students) donate their old materials and supplies. We sort and organize everything that comes in and make it available to local kids, thru our daily art classes and a brand new ART CLUB, which allows more children than we can have in our classes to get in on the fun.
Plan of Action
We currently teach classes at the West Broad Street YMCA to about 70 local children.
I have just finished writing a book, that we're in the process of self-publishing, which will help us to open programs like this in other parts of the city so that more people can join the excitment!
