The Problem
The What's Next? Ensemble is attempting to enhance the careers of young musicians and Los Angeles based composers through both performance experience and essential networking between composers and players.
By holding a 3-concert festival of new music representing many composers and many diverse instrumental ensembles, we are able to help participating young musicians build needed connections with other musicians in Southern California.
Young up and coming composers are heard and introduced to older, more established composers. Composers works are performed by young musicians who are excited to play their music.
Plan of Action
Following the framework we used for last year’s festival, there are three major phases in order to carry out the project. The first step is to reach composers through a general call for scores. This phase has already begun and simply involves spreading the word about our festival through various online and personal outlets. We have begun to receive scores and are expecting many more to come in before our deadline. As with last year’s festival we are committed to engaging as many composers as possible in the area, thereby furthering the size of our potential audience.
After the completion of the call for scores we begin the rehearsal process which involves both work among the musicians as well as rehearsals with the composers themselves. We believe that it is essential for composers and musicians to work together in order to ensure that the performance is exactly how the composer intends. Additionally such collaboration allows for the building of professional and social networking between musicians and composers, encouraging the potential for future collaborations.
During the rehearsal period and leading up to the concerts our volunteer staff works to promote the actual concerts in order to build as large and devoted an audience as possible. Our staff works with the understanding that the LACP is meant as a community project, a project devoted to connecting the performing, composing and general communities in order to further the art of contemporary classical music. The fact that our concerts are free and in a centralized location in downtown Los Angeles encourages this sense of community for the entire Southern California region. Through the kind of targeted advertisement techniques illustrated above, as well as advertising through media outlets such as the LA Weekly newspaper and KUSC classical radio we hope to spread the word about our event across as wide of a potential audience as possible.
