The Problem
The Louisville Male High School (LMHS) Advanced Placement Environmental Science (APES) class has been working in Beargrass Creek near the corner of Lexington Road and Grinstead Avenue in Jefferson County for the past 5 years. Mrs. Page and her APES class are trying to improve the quality of the water flowing in Beargrass Creek and then eventually into the Ohio River. The Ohio River is where the Louisville Metro community gets its water. Also there is a plethora of animal and plant life in the Ohio River. Improving the quality of the water in Beargrass Creek has a huge impact on the water quality in the Ohio River, and the community of Louisville human, animal, and plant alike.
Plan of Action
The LMHS APES class has conducted a variety of water and soil tests each year to see whether or not what we are doing is improving the area or not. So far the area we are working on in Beargrass Creek, the corner of Lexington Road and Grinstead Avenue, has continued to improve each year. The LMHS APES class has created a wetland area for water flowing into Beargrass Creek. The plants in the wetland absorbs pollutants in the water before it reaches the creek, decreasing the amount of pollution going into the creek. The APES class has also removed invasive species in the area and planted native species.
