The Problem
I am working towards ending social injustice one step at a time. I have helped various organizations with different social issues through my time with alternative spring breaks. I volunteered with United Cerebral Palsey to support the community of persons with disabilites. I volunteered with The Sobriety House of Denver to assist the organization in enabling recovering alcoholics to get their lives back on track. I volunteereed with The Food Bank of the Rockies, packaging food for families in need in step to end hunger. Additionally, I volunteered with the Colfax Community Network, an organization that provides an after school program to youth in poverty.
Plan of Action
Through the college I attend we have an alternative spring break program. I was involved with these my first two years as a participant in which I went on the trip and served the community we were visiting for a week. My final two years at school I have lead a trip for each spring break. In order to do this, I organized where we would be serving for the week, how we would make our budget, transportation, housing, and education for the participants prior to and during the trip. I know this program has impacted people nation wide as my school sends trips across the US for that week to do service. We are impacting those for the one week we are there, but also for a lifetime. Individuals are intrigued as to why a group of college students would want to spend their spring break helping them - and that is what is so great about the program, it has a ripple affect on others. We influence both the people we serve and ourselves. After a week of service you have this great feeling and are on cloud nine so you want to figure out what you can do next. In that context I find it important to educate the participants on what they can do at the end of the week, how they can keep doing service as they go back home.
