The Problem

My volunteer experience took place in Kolkata, India with the "untouchables" of the caste system in place there. These men, women, and children, are treated as less than human and are often abandoned to live and die in the streets without care or dignity. They are forced to live in a system of social injustice in which they have no possibility of upward mobility.

Plan of Action

I spent months planning my move to Kolkata. I planned to volunteer with the Missionaries of Charity, because they are a well-respected organization within the city (and the world at large!). I learned as much of the Bengali language as I could in order to facilitate communication with the mean and women I served. I invited four friends to join me in Kolkata during one of the months that I was there and helped them to become involved in the work taking place there.
